Pilot, flies Boeing 777, explores layover cities worldwide

My name is Niko, and for the past twelve years I have spent more time at ten thousand meters than on the ground. I am a Boeing 777 pilot, currently flying the 777-300ER variant. Dubai to Bangkok, Frankfurt to Tokyo, London to Singapore - these are not just lines in a logbook, they are the map of my life. Every time the landing gear touches an unfamiliar runway, something clicks inside me.

A stopover is a gift. Eighteen hours in Bangkok. Thirty-six in Amsterdam. I do not spend them at a hotel pool. Still in uniform, bag over my shoulder, I step out into the city and start walking. Just walking. No route, no three-day plan. In Osaka I found a ramen bar the size of a train compartment - eight seats, one owner cooking alone, the queue waiting in silence. It was the best thing I ate that year.

This site is where I write about exactly that. Not about sights from a guidebook, but about what you can actually discover in limited time, if you do not hesitate. The market in Marrakech before seven in the morning, when there are no tourists yet. The right coffee shop in Helsinki, the one locals walk to on foot in the freezing cold. A bar in Hong Kong where the bartender knows everyone by name except you - and that is perfectly fine.

This profession has taught me one important skill: reading an unfamiliar space quickly and accurately. In the cockpit there is no room for confusion. On the streets of a foreign city it is exactly the same. I walk in, look around, and take in the details. Then I write about it here.

If you also spend more time in transit than you planned, or simply want to know what you can fit into a single day in an unfamiliar city - you have come to the right place. Welcome aboard.

And let me allow myself a touch of dark humor - these days, flying to the Middle East means more stopovers than usual. A bad joke, I know. But these are the times we live in, and the humor matches.
