Turbulence is the shaking – or “bumps” as pilots call it – that you feel in the air. Not a malfunction, not a crash, not an emergency. Just air that moves in waves rather than smoothly. The plane hits those waves and rocks – like a boat on water.

But the passenger’s brain tells a completely different story in that moment. We’re going down. Something broke. The pilots have lost control. This article is about why that picture is wrong, and how to stop believing it.

What turbulence actually is

Air isn’t empty space. It’s a gas in constant motion: heated by the ground and rising, deflected by mountains and spinning into eddies, mixing between layers of different temperatures. These movements create zones where airflow is uneven – like a river with rocks beneath the surface.

When a plane flies through one of these zones, it gets tossed, rocked, sometimes drops sharply. Physically, it’s a change in lift on the wing. Nothing breaks, the engines keep running, the pilots have the aircraft under control.

Over the ocean, turbulence tends to be lighter – there’s no uneven ground heating. Over mountains it’s more common, especially in strong winds. Near the equator it happens more often because of thermal activity.

Can turbulence destroy a plane

No. In the entire history of commercial aviation, turbulence has not destroyed a single modern passenger aircraft.

A fact about structural strength

Aircraft wings are tested during certification to 150% of the maximum possible load. During testing, a Boeing 777 wing was bent upward by 7.3 meters – and didn’t break. What you feel in flight doesn’t come anywhere close to the structural limits of the aircraft.

Wings are designed to flex precisely so they can absorb loads. When a wing bends – that’s not “it’s about to snap off”, that’s the engineering doing its job.

Turbulence injuries do happen – but not from structural failure. They come from unsecured objects and unbuckled passengers. A passenger with their seatbelt fastened won’t suffer serious injury even in very heavy turbulence.

Why we fear something that isn’t dangerous

Fear of turbulence isn’t a flaw in your psychology. It’s a normal response from a brain that simply doesn’t understand the context.

How fear works

The brain processes threats faster than logic. Your body drops suddenly – the amygdala (the part of the brain that handles fear) fires an alarm signal in milliseconds, before the cortex can say “it’s fine, it’s just an air pocket”.

Add to that:

  • No control – you’re not driving, you can’t stop, you can’t see the road
  • Enclosed space – no way out
  • Altitude – evolutionarily, a dangerous environment
  • Not understanding the mechanics – the brain can’t predict what happens next

It’s a perfect recipe for panic, even when there’s no actual threat.

What pilots see while you’re panicking

While you’re experiencing a disaster in the cabin, this is typically what’s happening in the cockpit: nothing much.

Pilots receive information about turbulent zones in advance – from controllers and from aircraft that flew the same route earlier. They already know what’s ahead, and for them it’s a weather condition, not an emergency. About the same as a driver hitting a rough patch of road.

Practical techniques: what to do during turbulence

Before the flight

A few things that won’t eliminate turbulence but will help you handle it better:

  • Choose seats over the wing – there’s less movement there
  • Morning flights are usually smoother than evening ones (fewer thermal currents)
  • Install a turbulence tracking app (Turbli, SkyGuru)
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine – they amplify anxiety

During turbulence: the grounding technique

When turbulence starts and you feel panic building, give your brain a task. Any task. It shifts the brain from “threat!” mode to “solving a problem” mode.

  1. Tighten your seatbelt – a physical action that gives you a sense of control
  2. Press your feet flat on the floor – this works, I’ve tested it myself
  3. Watch the flight attendants – their calm tells you more than any words
  4. Count something – overhead lights, seats, breaths
  5. Tense and release your muscles – one group at a time, from feet up to shoulders
💡 The 5-4-3-2-1 method

Name to yourself: 5 things you can see. 4 sounds you can hear. 3 things you can touch. 2 smells. 1 taste. By the time you get to taste, the acute phase of panic has usually passed.

Breathing

Panic speeds up your breathing – which sends yet another “danger!” signal to your brain. Break the cycle:

Inhale for 4 counts – hold for 4 counts – exhale for 6 counts. The exhale longer than the inhale physiologically activates the parasympathetic nervous system – the one that signals “everything is fine”.

When the fear is aviophobia

Mild discomfort during turbulence is normal. But if you:

  • Avoid flying altogether or choose multi-day train journeys instead
  • Can’t sleep the night before a flight
  • Drink alcohol or take tranquilizers just to get on the plane
  • Experience panic attacks in flight

– that’s aviophobia, an anxiety disorder. It’s treatable. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) produces results in roughly 90% of cases within 5-10 sessions. It’s not just “talking to a psychologist” – it’s a set of specific techniques for retraining your brain’s responses.

📝 Note

There are dedicated fear-of-flying courses – often run by airlines or flight schools. They typically include aviation theory, a simulator session, and sometimes a flight with a psychologist on board.

Routes over the Himalayas, Andes, and Rockies carry an almost guaranteed rough ride under certain conditions. Transatlantic routes are usually smoother, but CAT – clear-air turbulence at jet stream boundaries – can appear there without warning.

For comparison: the risk of dying in a car on the way to the airport is roughly 100 times higher than the risk in the flight itself.

Hold the grab rails, sit on the toilet or lower yourself to the floor – that way you won’t fall. Wait for the shaking to settle, then return to your seat. If the seatbelt sign was already on when you got up, you ignored the recommendation – but it’s not a catastrophe.

For nausea – yes (Dramamine, Bonine). For fear – no. If your problem is actually motion sickness from the bumps, medication will help. If it’s panic, you need different methods or work with a therapist.

Yes, research shows CAT (clear-air turbulence) zones have increased by around 15% over the past 40 years. But that doesn’t make flying more dangerous – planes were already designed with enormous structural margins.

Convective turbulence – yes, it shows up on radar. CAT is harder, it’s invisible. But pilots receive reports from aircraft ahead and can request a different altitude. Sometimes detouring isn’t worth the fuel or time, so they fly straight through.
